Preparing for Your Child’s First Dental Visit!
You are welcome to be in the room with your child during his/her examination or remain in the lobby. This option is available to you at every checkup, not just the first visit.
For infants, we recommend that your child’s first dental visit be scheduled after the arrival of his/her first tooth. This usually occurs between 6-12 months of age. After the first visit, you should schedule a dental checkup every 6 months through the rest of their childhood and adolescence.
The first official visit consists of a complete dental exam and cleaning. This includes checking for cavities and gum disease, correct alignment of the jaws and development of the teeth. X-rays may be taken based on the needs of your child. The appointment also includes a final consultation to discuss any further questions or necessary dental treatment.
Before the appointment begins, we’ll describe the process to your child and show him/her any instruments that will be involved. This is done to eliminate fear of the unknown.
Each child will receive a new toothbrush, dental floss and instructions on how to use these items. Every appointment ends with a special picture of your child and a trip to the prize box for a job well done!
